Unpaid care work: increased policy visibility

Unpaid care work underpins all societies, rich and poor, but is unrecognised and undervalued by policymakers and legislators. A UK-based research organization, interactions.eldis.org, a project of the Institute of Development Studies  has addressed this issue in a special report about empowerment of women and girls in developing countries.

What are your thoughts about unpaid care work provided by both women and men, and its contributions to both the economy and human development?

  • I remember being in the USSR in 1975 and being told by women that communism had liberated women  As I talked to them, exhausted after their work day, now taking care of the children and the many household duties, I thought to myself, "..liberated?  You just worked a full day paving roads,  you left at 6pm in the freezing cold, now you are cooking, cleaning, mending your child's clothes, and soon your husband will be coming home for dinner.  If you're lucky you'll get to bed by midnight... liberated?  I don't think so."  I was 17 years old.

These videos are poignant and sad.  The graphics are beautiful.  The need for a caring economy is great.  Thank you for posting this.
